WCH Breast Center Performing Stereotactic Breast Biopsies
Administration is pleased to announce that Wickenburg Community Hospital has expanded the Breast Center with the addition of its first Stereotactic Breast Biopsy System. The biopsy system by Hologic Inc. is an amazing addition that will complement the nationally recognized Breast Center of Excellence. With Digital Mammography, Breast Ultrasounds and now, Breast Biopsies, WCH will be providing a full range of services from screening to diagnosing breast disease. The staff of highly trained mammographers takes amazing pride in the job they do. It will be the same mammographers that patients will see when the need for a breast biopsy arises.
The ability to do biopsies has been needed in our community for some time. Until now, all patients needing breast biopsies had to travel to Phoenix and beyond for a procedure that is considered routine in most places. “Being able to do breast biopsies at the hospital will save time and expense for many of our patients who typically have to take an entire day out of their busy lives to get this done” says Peter Stachowicz, Chief of Ambulatory Services & Medical Imaging Manager at WCH. “The importance of breast health screenings cannot be over-stated”. According to breastcancer.org about 1 in 8 U.S. women (roughly 12%) will develop invasive breast cancer over the course of her lifetime. For women in the U.S., breast cancer death rates are higher than those for any other cancer, excluding lung cancer.
The Stereotactic Breast Biopsy System has been made possible by the partnership WCH has with the Pink Ribbon Angels, a nonprofit program of the WCH Foundation that provides mammograms and biopsies for the uninsured and underinsured of Wickenburg and surrounding areas. The PRA have contributed to the hospital in many ways such as providing free mammograms to those in financial need and donating equipment and mammography gowns. Now, with their generous support of the Breast Center of Excellence, the Breast Biopsy System has been made available. Their continued commitment to our hospital, our patients and our community is greatly appreciated.
