What is Hand Surgery?
Hand surgery is a specialized field of medicine focused on diagnosing, treating, and preventing conditions affecting the hand, wrist, forearm, and upper arm. A hand surgeon is trained to manage these problems with both surgical and non-surgical treatments to restore function and relieve pain. This includes everything from sprains and fractures to nerve conditions and arthritis.
Conditions We Treat
Our orthopedic team is equipped to handle a diverse array of conditions. We provide personalized treatment plans for ailments including:
Common Conditions
- Carpal Tunnel Syndrome: This condition is a pinched nerve in the wrist. Pressure builds in a narrow passageway called the carpal tunnel, placing pressure on the median nerve and causing pain, numbness, and tingling.
- Trigger Finger/Trigger Digit: You may experience pain at the base of a finger or thumb, which can progress to a clicking or popping sensation. This is caused by thickened tissue that prevents the smooth gliding of tendons, sometimes causing the finger to lock in a bent position.
- Arthritis of the Hand and Wrist: A joint is where two bones connect. Over time, due to genetics or injury, the protective cartilage can wear away, causing bone-on-bone rubbing. This can be painful and limit hand and wrist use.
- Ganglion Cysts: These are common, non-cancerous lumps that often form on the top or palm-side of the wrist. While usually harmless, they can cause discomfort, stiffness, and weakness.
With the addition of our board-certified Plastic Surgeon, Dr. Yospur, we also offer care for:
- DeQuervain’s Tenosynovitis: A specific type of tendinitis on the thumb side of the wrist. It can cause swelling, tenderness, and significant pain with twisting or grasping motions.
- Dupuytren’s Contracture: This disease involves the thickening of tissue in the palm, which can cause one or more fingers (most often the ring and small fingers) to bend into a flexed position over several years.
Injury and Trauma
- Hand and Wrist Fractures: A broken bone requires proper alignment to heal correctly. Muscles can pull bone fragments apart, so specialized care is necessary to ensure the bone heals in the proper position and function is restored.
- Tendon Injuries: Tendons are vital for wrist and finger movement. They can be damaged by cuts, sports injuries, crush trauma, or accidents, affecting your ability to bend or straighten your fingers and wrist.
- Mallet Finger: Often called a “jammed finger,” this injury occurs when the tip of the finger is forcefully bent, rupturing the extensor tendon and causing the fingertip to droop.
- Thumb Sprains: An injury to the ligaments that stabilize the thumb joints. A sprain can range from a stretched ligament to a complete tear, causing instability and pain.
- Hook of Hamate Fracture: The hamate is one of the eight small carpal bones in the wrist. Its small, hook-like projection can be fractured, most commonly in athletes who play baseball, golf, or racquet sports.
- Digital Nerve Injury: Nerves in our fingers allow us to feel texture, temperature, and more. Trauma, from small cuts to major accidents, can damage these nerves and impair sensation.
- Fingertip and Nailbed Injuries: The fingertip can be crushed, cut, or hit, resulting in damage to the skin, bone, nail, or the padded pulp. These common injuries require careful treatment to preserve function and appearance.
- Animal Bites: Bites can cause significant damage to tendons, ligaments, and bones, along with a high risk of infection. Prompt medical attention is crucial.
