Your Guide to Self-Care Through the Holidays

The holiday season comes with joyful moments—but also a flurry of expectations, busy schedules, and, sometimes, stress. It’s easy to feel overwhelmed by trying to make everything perfect for everyone. Prioritizing your own well-being isn’t selfish; it’s essential to enjoying the season and being present for those you love. Practicing meaningful self-care through the holidays can help you find peace and happiness, even in the busiest moments.

Let Go of Perfection

One key to a more peaceful holiday is letting go of the idea that everything must be flawless. Social media and advertisements often set unrealistic standards for stunning decorations and elaborate meals. The truth? You don’t need a picture-perfect celebration. Focus on what truly matters: sharing time and making memories with the people you care about. Give yourself permission to take shortcuts, simplify plans, and accept “good enough.”

Set Realistic Expectations

Be honest about what you can handle without getting burned out. Your time and energy are limited. It’s okay if you can’t attend every event or uphold every tradition. Choose the activities that bring you the most joy and say no to the rest—guilt-free. When you need to decline an invitation, remember that “no” is a complete sentence. Protecting your time for rest is a true act of self-care.

Simple, Practical Self-Care

The holidays can disrupt healthy routines, but taking care of yourself can be as simple as mindfully building small habits into your days. Start with rest: make sleep a priority, aiming for seven to nine hours a night. Lack of sleep drains your energy and increases stress.

Stay active in ways you enjoy. Even a short winter walk to look at lights or gentle stretching at home can boost your mood. Move your body not out of obligation, but because it helps you feel your best.

Nourish yourself, too. Enjoy holiday treats, but try to also eat regular, balanced meals rich in high quality protein, fruits, vegetables, and whole grains—these help maintain your energy and mood. Don’t forget to drink water between cups of cocoa or cider.

Savor the Season

Amid the rush, take moments to be truly present: enjoy the warmth of a favorite drink, the sound of laughter, or the sparkle of decorations on a quiet evening. These mindful moments help you appreciate the season’s simple joys and keep stress in check.

Focus on connection rather than obligation. Let go of the pressure to find perfect gifts or host ideal gatherings. Real connections come from heartfelt conversations and shared experiences, not from flawless planning.

By setting boundaries, embracing imperfection, and taking time to care for your own needs, you can create a holiday season that feels more joyful and less overwhelming. With a little intention, you’ll discover that the best memories often come from moments of calm and connection.

“You can’t pour from an empty cup. When you feel the pressure building, give yourself permission to pause and breathe. Just five minutes of box breathing (inhale 4 seconds, hold 4 seconds, exhale 4 seconds, hold 4 seconds, repeat) stimulates your Vagus nerve and calms your central nervous system. Think of it as your built-in reset button.” Courtney Neal, APRN, FNP-C

Healthcare billing delays often arise from extended insurance claim processing. These insurance delays can lead to confusion and financial strain for patients, who may not receive their bill until weeks or months after care is provided, making it harder to plan financially.

At Wickenburg Community Hospital & Clinics, we strive for timely and accurate billing. However, we cannot bill our patients until the organization has received full and accurate payment from insurance companies, a process that is often protracted and beyond our control. Once we are confident that the patient’s claims are processed and paid accurately by the insurance company, then we move forward with issuing a bill to the patient. Rest assured, we are committed to clear communication and our patient’s well-being.
